The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
