New York's next mayor affirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, did not confirm his residency plans right away after his triumph in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
