Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
